Are there different types of residential elevators?

Yes, the difference is all in the type of drive system you choose for your elevator. We offer two types of systems: roped hydraulic and winding drum elevators. Each system has its advantages and cost considerations. Physiolift would be happy to talk to you about each type of system to give you the flexibility to select the best drive for your application.

How much weight can an elevator hold?
A standard home elevator can carry up to 750 pounds.  The Evolution LU/LA Low Rise Commercial Elevator can hold up to 1400 pounds. 

Will the door ever open while the elevator is moving?
No. A locking device on the door prevents it from opening while the elevator is traveling between floors.

Can the landing door be opened when the elevator is not there?
No. All landing doors are mechanically locked and can only be released when the elevator is at that floor.

What happens if I have a problem with the elevator and it's not during normal business hours?

Thanks to the computerized controller in a home elevator, we can also solve many problems right away, over the phone, so you may not even need a repair visit.

Are elevators expensive?

Residential elevators are not expensive when you consider the benefits and value to your investment. Do not be fooled by elevators you can buy on the internet for a lot less. Safety, reliability, and service are key to enjoying your elevator for years to come, and you will pay more for the guarantee. We represent 3 different companies who have been in business for many years. Are there tax advantages to buying a home elevator?

You need to consult with your accountant on how the tax advantage may effect you, however, if you have a medical necessity and have a prescription from a licensed physician, the sales tax would be waived and also a percentage based on your annual income may be deducted.  Moreover, adding an elevator to your home may increase your home value as much as 10% depending on the value of the home.

Is a pit required to have a residential elevator? And if so, how deep?

Although most elevators require a pit, there are a couple of models available that do not require one. The pitless elevators open new options for installation of elevators in existing applications without costly slab cuts and reinforcing. For new homes, a pit depth of 8" maximum is usually sufficient.

Are residential elevators limited in size?

Residential elevators are limited in size by two factors. The area of the platform occupied by passengers cannot exceed 15 sq ft based on ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) 17.1 requirements. The height of the cab is restricted by overhead space at the top landing and physical restrictions of the car frame. Elevator Specialties standard cab size is 12 sq ft (3' x 4') with a 6' 8" ceiling. Cab height can be customized up to a maximum of 8'.

What happens in the event of a power outage?

Every Physiolift elevator includes features designed to compensate for power outages. In the event of a power outage, our controller automatically reverts to battery powered operation. In this mode, the controller will extinguish all unnecessary light sources to conserve power; illuminate every button in the car operating panel to provide in-car emergency lighting; and finally, it will lower, level and stop at the next available landing.


How can I keep small children from using the elevators?
Key operation is available as well as custom control systems. 

What size car should I purchase?
The size of your elevator is dictated by the amount of space available. However, a 36" x 48" or larger car is recommended in order to accommodate a standard wheelchair.


What interior finishes are available?
Physiolift offers a wide variety of custom finishes and features.  Oak, Birch, and Maple are offered as standard wood panels.  Hickory and Cherry are provided as optional woods with other varieties available upon request.  Each wood product comes unfinished allowing you to match stains and finishes to your home’s décor.  Please see our products page for more information regarding all the optional features we offer.
